There are two buses in the Macintosh IIci; the main system bus that runs at 25MHz, and the NuBus bus that runs at 10MHZ. Because these buses run at different speeds, they must synchronize before they can communicate. This synchronization, along with a ‚Äúhandshaking‚Äù dialog that takes place each time information is transferred, results in an ‚Äúoverhead‚Äù in performance. This overhead is unavoidable and accounts for the discrepancy between the 56 percent CPU clock speed increase and the 36 percent video performance improvement.
